Monday, April 20, 2009Professional athletes always strive to become number one. There are a lot of physical demands and mental preparation they go through to stay on top, but the money they make is ludicrous, and what some make during a single game, can be more then what a person makes in a year. Professional athletes have to keep in peak physical condition, and although their bodies are in excellent working order, they do not seem to keep their minds in the same shape. A good education is the key factor in getting a good job. Yet the athletes giving children these messages did not stay in university. Uneducated people are what are wrong with professional sports. A young man or woman can be drafted into their sport right from their first year of college. There is nothing to lean back on if this person gets seriously hurt because sports came before education. Is it really a tragedy if the next “Michael Jordan” or the next “Barry Bonds” had to stay in university another two years to get a degree? Many people go through university, graduate at the top of their class, and work hard to reach the top. These hard working, dedicated people had to struggle through university and a few years on the job to get where they wanted to be. They raise families and keep happy and healthy lives. Yet, these people don’t get multi-million dollar endorsement deals. We don’t see children hanging posters of these people on their walls. No, we see professional athletes. There are millions of dedicated people who play sports to stay in shape and have fun. You’ll never see these people fighting over contracts and going on strike. They are just glad that they can find ice time or an open net or court to play on. Professional athletes no longer want to participate in the sport for the love of the game; they want to play because if they don’t they will not get their million-dollar paycheck. Oh yes, they have to feed their families with their millions of dollars. All I know is that millions of other people in the world do not even get paid a third of what these athletes do and they feed their families just fine. In conclusion, professional athletes are ridiculously overpaid and they have to stop asking for more money from franchises and sponsors and they need to realize what they already have. Even if professional athletes are good at their sport they should stay in school to receive their degree. If they are good now, in two years they can only be better. This would be a good influence on children and it sets a good example. These people are getting paid millions of dollars to do something that most people would pay to do. Professional athletes should realize that they are incredibly lucky to be doing what they are and they should not ask for the large amounts of money they do.
