Environmental Policies
Green Policies
More people are choosing to do business with green companies, and so in order to help you make your choice, I've listed my energy efficient policies below.
- I buy my electricity from a 100% renewable energy company, and therefore my carbon footprint for electricity is 0.
- I have CF lightbulbs in every light, with the exception of my refrigerator (tried it, it won't work), oven (temperature problems), and one halogen stove light that came built in to my microwave.
- I practice cooperative recycling. Each suburb here has different recycling policies; if my students can't recycle something that is recyclable elsewhere, they can bring it to me and I'll trade it off to a different student who lives in a suburb where it is recycled.
- I compost, and every inch of ground that is under my control is planted with non-invasive or native species, grown organically and chosen for their biodiversity.
- I reuse everything that can be reused. Even shredded paper is reused.
- I have programmable thermostats that are allowed a wide range. Thermostats are turned off when nobody is here except when there is a danger of freezing and then they are set at 55 degrees. They are also turned off when the temperature remains within a comfortable range.
- I provide digital copies of music so students can print off only the pages they need, rather than buying books and incurring all the waste involved with printing, transportation, and the like.
- My Carrollton studio is located within 1/8 mile of public transport.
- Carpooling and ridesharing are encouraged, and I have facilities for students to wait for lessons.
- I have chosen a website provider and blog/wiki software with efficient code so the pages load faster, thereby using less electricity on your computer.
- I have a new vehicle that gets almost 30 mpg in city driving and is one of the cleanest-burning cars in production. I use it only in trip-chaining, never in single-stop use. I typically drive fewer than 100 miles per week.
- In the summer, fans are used where possible to cool rather than air-conditioning.
- My Carrollton studio is under my physical control, and toxins from cleaning products, paint, synthetic fibers etc. are reduced to extremely negligible levels. This studio is asthma- and allergy-friendly.
- My water footprint is around 300 cubic meters per year. The average US citizen uses over 1,000 cubic meters per year.
- My diet is approximately one-third vegan, and where possible purchased from local sources or grown myself.
If you have a suggestion on how my business can be made more "green," please let me know--just click the "Talk" link at the top or bottom of the page, and leave a comment! If possible I'll implement your suggestion.
