Are the tags linked with Technorati or they just for our own categorization only? If they are linked with Technorati, how are two-level tags of pages handled (ie, tags of the form software:release)?

Tags actually aren't linked with Technorati, and I'll admit that I probably have a beginner's level of familiarity with Technorati and other tagging services. Let's just say it's been on the to-do list for a while, and well, I guess now is as good a time as any to try and get it off my list. So, My thought at the moment for two-level tags would be to just treat them as a one-level tag: "software:release" would become "software+release". What do you think?
So, looking at Technorati Help, they describe two methods for "Integrating Technorati tags" and then a ping process using XML-RPC. Of these three, I'm leaning towards tagging the feeds and/or pinging technorati directly with the software. My question now being, would these two methods be sufficient? Or is something important lost by not tagging each post with links? Main 16:11, Aug 20, 2006
Your idea seems fine to me, both about breaking up two-level tags into two separate one-level tags and about using the feed for the tags instead of using links. I don't suppose we'd lose anything important by using feeds for tags. I guess you could go for whatever is easier for you to implement. :-) Thanks again for your efforts.

As of V1.1.1, the tags within feeds are done. I'd also still like to look closer at pinging sites like technorati. Before I go forward though, I'm wondering what other services like technorati could/should wikyblog ping as well? Main 12:10, Aug 24, 2006
I just noticed in your RSS feed that you are treating the two-level tags as (example): <category>SourceForge+Releases</category>. I think this should actually be <category>SourceForge</category><category>Releases</category>. The + sign is used to represent spaces when a multiworded tag is mentioned in an anchor using the rel="tag" attribute. But this is not required when using the feed for tags. For example, Bug Tracking:Closed should be represented as <category>Bug Tracking</category><category>Closed</category>.
At least, this is what I think is right. :-)

It's definitely an issue I hadn't planned for... my concern with splitting the tags like you suggest is that they lose meaning
<category>Closed</category>
has no inherent meaning associated with "Bug Tracking"... would it be overkill to do all possibilities?
<category>Bug Tracking</category>
<category>Closed</category>
<category>Bug Tracking+Closed</category>

I get you but I was thinking of having a personal and technology bliki in one place. So I'd have tags like Technology:Ruby on Rails or Personal:Book Review. If we combine these levels as "Technology Ruby on Rails" or "Personal Book Review", it's not really correct. Having them as seperate tags would make sense. Of course, yes, that could be overkill. Do you think <category>Technology/Ruby on Rails</category> should be the way to go? More info here.

That's perfect! I was completely unaware that technorati supported hierarchic tags and had assumed I needed some sort of work-around. Thanks, I'll get that updated!

Glad to have helped. I also ran into an interesting blog that talks a lot about Technorati and blogging -- an interesting read: A Consuming Experience
